Most of the Kilimanjaro Challenge 3 participants will return to Malta tomorrow after having successfully reached the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, in Tanzania, the world's highest free-standing mountain at an altitude of 5,895 metres.
The trekkers faced atrocious conditions during their climb, with heavy rainfall and lots of snow throughout. In fact, they were told that conditions had not been so bad in 25 years. Just a few days before their summit attempt they were informed that other climbers had been unable to reach the summit due to the weather conditions.
Out of the 18 participants, 17 reached the summit. One was unable to make it as she developed altitude sickness which is brought about by the drastic decrease in oxygen. Immediate descent is a necessity in such cases since it could be fatal.
The Kilimanjaro Challenge is a fund-raising event which over the past months has been striving to collect Lm45,000 towards financing a prothesis for Amy Zahra as well as to refurbish a school and convent in Ethiopia.
One can donate via SMS on 5061 7371 to donate Lm1, 5061 8077 to donate Lm2 and 5061 8927 to donate Lm3. Alternatively donations can be made by means of a deposit in accounts held at Bank of Valletta (account number 40015232535) or HSBC (75108050001).
