Cleaning of beaches

Mr Shane Johnson (The Sunday Times, January 14) took umbrage that the Ministry of Tourism and Culture ensured that Golden Bay was given special attention by the beach cleaners during AC Milan's training camp in Malta earlier this month.

Mr Johnson also stated that during the past five years he has visited the beach daily and has never seen anyone clean this beach.

For the record, the beach cleaning section of the MTAC not only cleans this beach daily, but also cleans all the beaches around the island. Last season the Malta Tourism Authority also funded the manufacture of 100 new bins specifically for Golden Sands Bay to replace the ones used.

Rubbish collection and a clean-up are carried out early in the morning, every day, including weekends and public holidays to ensure that the beach is clean and tidy before the arrival of bathers.

Rather than feeling insulted, Mr Johnson should be pleased that an extra effort was made to ensure that visitors were greeted with the best that we had to offer.
