Two drivers had to be freed from the wreckage of their cars following a head-on collision several metres up from the Drydocks gate in Ghajn Dwieli Road, Paola, yesterday evening. The drivers, together with two female passengers, were hospitalised.

The police were not in a position to say what kind of injuries were sustained.

A resident said that at about 8.30 p.m. he heard a loud bang and flying debris hitting his window panes. On rushing out to investigate he saw the two vehicles, a Ford Escort and a Hyundai Pony, in a state of almost total loss with smoke coming out from one of the vehicles. However, none of the cars caught fire. Other debris smashed the rear window of a parked car.

Personnel from the Civil Protection Department freed the drivers by cutting various sections of the cars.
