The Parliamentary Secretary for Agriculture and Fisheries, Frans Agius, said yesterday that despite the fact that the market was open to foreign products, surveys show that consumers preferred to buy Maltese fresh products.
Dr Agius was speaking when he inaugurated an exhibition of processed food products organised by the Regional Province of Agrigento of Sicily at Le Meridien Phoenicia, in Floriana.
He hoped the exhibition would serve as an incentive for greater collaboration between Maltese and Italian producers and processors.
Twelve producers from Agrigento are displaying products ranging from oranges, wines and olive oil to confectionery items and other processed agricultural items.
The exhibition at the hotel's ballroom closes today.
