Marvic Micallef, one of Malta's three international volleyball referees, has just returned from Tenerife, Spain, where he controlled matches from the Youth European Championship qualifiers.

Together with Micallef (picture), there were three other international referees from Switzerland, Italy and Belgium officiating at this tournament.

The teams taking part were France, Estonia, Spain, Romania and Portugal who finished in this order. The top two advanced to the finals.

France were a step ahead of their opponents. They finished with maximum points and lost only one set, winning 12 to finish top of the group. Second-placed Estonia only lost to France but the set ratio was closer - nine won and seven lost.

Micallef controlled two games as first referee - Estonia vs Portugal (3-2) and Estonia vs Spain (3-0).

Micallef also carried out duties as second referee in three other matches - Portugal vs Spain, Romania vs Portugal and Estonia vs Romania.

The other two Maltese international referees are Antonello Calleja and Frankie Tanti.
