Prime Minster Lawrence Gonzi will today invite Pope Benedict XVI to visit Malta at the earliest possible opportunity.

Speaking yesterday to around 150 members of the Maltese community in Rome, Dr Gonzi said it would be fitting if the Pope made the visit to complete the cause for sainthood of the Blessed Dun Gorg Preca.

Dr Gonzi told The Times: "I don't know whether it will be possible but I will give it a try. The Prime Minister will meet the Pontiff this morning at the Vatican.

It is understood that the Pope usually sends cardinals when requests are made for Blessed to be declared saints in their home country.

Church officials have, however, expressed optimism that he will make an exception since Malta is so close.

Today, Dr Gonzi will also meet Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone and visit the tomb of Pope John Paul II.

The Prime Minister, accompanied by his wife Kate and foreign minister Michael Frendo returns to Malta, this afternoon.
