The Republican National Alliance - ANR - has applauded the government's stance on divorce against what it called the "EU's attempts at forcing the issue".

"A government's first duty is the protection of its society and as long as the absolute majority of the Maltese do not want the legalisation of divorce, then it is the government's duty to make sure it is not introduced, especially through undemocratic means.

"One can only augur that our government would apply the same zeal in defending our society from other threatening and destabilising phenomena," it said.

The European Commission is proposing to streamline the jurisdiction of European courts over divorce legislation and international marriages. The government is insisting on a legal assurance that would guarantee the proposal would not oblige the Maltese courts to hand down a divorce judgment by virtue of a foreign law.

The alliance said that contrary to many "deceitful" claims, it believes that divorce is not a human right, but a privilege. "It's a licence to harm other human beings irreparably. It's a method of destroying children's hope in the goodness of the world," it said.

It said it believes that marriage is being entered into too lightly and the civil authorities should promote education on marriage, "particularly in cases of civil marriage as the growing number of broken families is partly due to ignorance in respect of duty, responsibility, sacrifices and obligations.

"The destruction of the traditional family was always a Marxist priority documented in the communist manifesto. Marxists see this destruction as the only effective instrument to achieve social revolution. It is, therefore, no surprise to see Marxists - who nowadays call themselves liberals - clamouring and militating for divorce, gay rights - such as the 'right' to marry - and radical feminist issues in the name of progress," it added.

The ANR said it is in the interest of society to inform itself, remain vigilant, and unmask such attempts to undermine "our cherished family model and social fabric at every opportunity".
