South African Giniel De Villiers won the shortened seventh stage of the Dakar Rally to take the overall lead from Spain's Carlos Sainz yesterday. De Villiers, driving a Volkswagen, charged to his second stage victory over 580 km from Zouerat to Atar in Mauritania. Frenchman Stephane Peterhansel was two minutes and 46 seconds behind in second place while twice world champion Sainz lost almost five minutes.
