The police have denied acting arrogantly in regard to the cultural event organised by the Marsa local council in Balbi Street, Marsa on New Year's Eve, which the council had claimed was ruined because of police behaviour.

In a statement the police also denied that it had threatened the mayor of Marsa or any member of the council.

The police noted that although according to law, permits for public entertainment only required the permit of the local council, the same law insisted that the council should pass a copy of the application to the Police Commissioner two weeks before the event.

But, the police added, the New Year's Eve activity was not covered by such a permit. Neither were the police informed about the activity.

No precautions to restrict traffic, avoiding danger to the public present, were taken except for the placement of two cones at the end of the street, the police said.
