A series of concerts taking place in auberges and palaces, featuring works by different composers and linked to intimate letters written by or to them, will commence at the Auberge de Castille, in Valletta, today at 8 p.m. with music by Verdi.

This series, entitled Intimate Letters, will be supported by Camilleri Wines with their Palatino range of wines.

At the start of his career, Verdi was to lose both his wife and his two children and vowed to give up composition. It was through persuasion that he took up his musical career to write Nabucco.

Tonight's concert will be dedicated to the three arias for bass and Verdi's only chamber work, the String Quartet in E Minor.

The concerts are coordinated by violinist Sarah Spiteri. Apart from the Auberge de Castille they will be held at Sala Isouard at the Manoel Theatre on February 22, the cellars of Auberge d'Italie on March 29, Auberge d'Aragon on May 20 and the Inquisitor's Palace, in Girgenti on July 12.

Tickets for Intimate Letters cost Lm3 and are available at St James Cavalier's booking office, telephone 2122 3200. There are also two special offers: either any three concerts for Lm15 or all six concerts for Lm20.

Intimate Letters are also being supported by Novartis, Bank of Valletta, Vascas, Portomaso and Go Mobile.
