Bottom-of-the-table Dunfermline withstood a late fightback to knock Rangers out of the Scottish FA Cup yesterday with an upset 3-2 victory.

Jim Hamilton and Stephen Simmons scored in the first half of the third-round clash for Dunfermline while Phil McGuire headed a third goal in the first minute after the interval.

Rangers, under caretaker manager Ian Durrant after Frenchman Paul Le Guen left by mutual consent last Thursday, responded with two goals from striker Kris Boyd to spark a frenetic finish.

However, Dunfermline held on to record a memorable victory over Rangers, who trail league leaders Celtic by 17 points.

Dunfermline will now meet Cup holders Hearts in the fourth round.
