Hear, hear Charlie Galea of NSW, Australia (News Blackout, January 2). The news service from Malta is pathetic.

Most items are so long they are more in documentary form. So much so that if we have five news items we are doing very well and sometimes the service runs for only 20 minutes. News items should run for no longer than 45 to 60 seconds. TV news are a teaser for tomorrow's newspaper.

With regard to the mumbling of presenters, the fault lies with the studio technician who somehow has a knack of hiding the microphone in some folds in the presenter's clothing. The studio lighting also leaves a lot to be desired. And please let's have fewer religious items.

Plus, how about some vox pops, that is, interviews with the people in the street who can give us their opinions on some matters of the day?

Over here the PBS news is slotted among other news from all over the world and I shrink when our turn comes up.

I have spent 40 years in the film and television industry, now retired. So I hope I do know what I am talking about.
