Massimo Cremona reached his objective and retained his no.1 spot in the world rankings following the latest list issued by world body FISTF this week.
Cremona finished with 3,183.75 points, followed by Dutchman Verhagen, 3,139.25, and Portuguese Guimares, 2,319.50. Spain's Flores is fourth (2,003.25) and Italy's Intra fifth (1,795).
Other Maltese players in the Top 50 are Joseph Mifsud in 13th place with 1,112.63 points, Hansel Mallia (17th, 988.5) and Mark Gauci (33rd, 626.25).
The run-in for the no.1 position was a close affair with Cremona outwitting Verhagen by only 44.5 points. The Maltese player missed three international events, Roche-fort in Belgium, Dunfries in Scotland and Issy in France.
Verhagen took full advantage and garnered useful points in all three tournaments to close the gap on Cremona.
"I am very satisfied with this position at the end of the year," Cremona was quoted as saying.
"It was one of my objectives for 2006. It was not easy but with hard training and sacrifice I made it.
"Now, I have to continue on what I've built. My aim is to win the Italian league with Perugia and the World Cup in France."
