Amelia: Marco Amelia has not ruled out the possibility of a January move despite signing a new contract for Livorno. The World Cup winner renewed his deal this week, penning a new contract until 2011, but the player insists his future is still in doubt. "The agreement with Livorno had already been finalised a while ago, but it's very hard to say what will happen next," said the goalkeeper who has caught the eye of Milan and Liverpool.
Leeds: Former Norway international Tore Andre Flo has signed for struggling Leeds United, the English second division club confirmed yesterday. The former Norway international will link up with old Chelsea team-mate Dennis Wise, now the Leeds coach, after agreeing a contract until the end of the season. The 33-year-old Flo, who was capped 76 times for Norway, was released by Oslo-based Vaalerenga after injuries limited his appearances for the club.
Beckham: Real Madrid have offered a two-year contract extension to David Beckham and will hold talks with the former England captain's representatives during the next two weeks. "We have a definite offer on the table which is for two more years and is worth slightly more than his existing deal," Beckham's spokesman Simon Oliveira said yesterday. Beckham's contract with Real expires at the end of June and as of January 1 the 31-year-old has been free to talk to other clubs.
Strike threat: Portuguese soccer players' union president Joaquim Evangelista has threatened to call for strikes if the government goes ahead with income tax increases for footballers, the news agency Lusa said. A Finance Ministry spokesman said the government had approved the measure in 2003 and raised income taxes for soccer players by 10 per cent every year since.
Fonseca: Rolando Fonseca said he wants to reclaim his record as Costa Rica's all-time leading scorer from Paulo Wanchope, who has quit the national side. Fonseca's total of 42 goals was overtaken in 2005 by Wanchope, who has since taken his tally to 45. Fonseca, 32, was left out of the World Cup squad last year but has been recalled for next month's CONCACAF Gold Cup qualifying tournament in El Salvador by coach Hernan Medford.
Jensen: Out-of-favour Fulham left-back Niclas Jensen wants to leave the London club for a team that will help him keep his spot in the Denmark national squad. Jensen has six months left on his contract but has lost out to Wayne Bridge and lately has not even been on Fulham's bench for Premiership matches.
Hardcourt Championships: Serbian third seed Ana Ivanovic swept aside Venezuelan Milagros Sequera 6-1 6-2 to advance to the quarter-finals of the Australian women's hardcourt championships on the Gold Coast yesterday. The 19-year-old world number 14, a winner in Montreal last season, gave the South American little chance in a victory that secured a last-eight encounter with Israeli fifth seed Shahar Peer. Second seed Dinara Safina cruised past fellow-Russian Maria Kirilenko 6-2 7-5.
