There are few embarrassing moments to compare with being the sole entrant in a competition category and still failing to win. Yes, that is precisely what happened to two men who were dedicated enough to enter a crib competition organised by the National Folk Commission.

Goodwill to all men fell one notch short for a mechanical crib by Johan Briffa from St Peter's Philharmonic Society in Birzebbuga and a live crib by John Mary Deguara of Ghajn Rihana, in Burmarrad.

There was more festive cheer for others, however. Joseph Theuma of Luqa placed first with his large static crib made of stone, while the large static crib category made of polystyrene was won by Adrian Busuttil of Sliema, and the small static crib category was won by Raymond Deguara of the Nicolò Isouard Philharmonic Society of Mosta.

Even streets had better fortune than some of the human beings in this competition:

Palm Street, in Paola, was awarded first place in the commercial roads category, and Antonio Bosio Street, Msida, won the other roads category.

The clubs, councils, organisations and civic centres façade category was won by the Antoine de Paule Philharmonic Society Christ the King Band Club of Paola.
