On the occasion of Zamenhof Day (December 15) commemorated by Esperantists all over the world, the Malta Esperanto-Societo organised a cultural evening at the British Legion, Valletta, to distribute trophies and books to the winners of an essay competition. Forty students from different schools took part. After short talks about Dr Zamenhof, the inventor of Esperanto, who was born on December 15, 1859, prizes were distributed to Claudia Bezzina (first prize), Stephanie Santucci (second), and Carolanne Casha (third), all from the Sacred Heart Foundation, St Julian's. Consolation prizes were presented to Sarah Buhagiar (Canon Paolo Pullicino School, Rabat), Roxanne Caruana (Margaret Mortimer Junior Lyceum, Santa Lucija), and Norma Magro (Sacred Heart Foundation). Seen here with the prize winners are John Vella Bondin, society secretary, Dr Carmel Mallia, president, and Anthony Mercieca, member.
