Recently the Third World Group, a local NGO, embarked on an EU-based project entitled GLEN (Global Education Network Project) which enables Maltese volunteers to be involved in an unforgettable experience in one of three developing countries for a three-month period.

Third World Group is calling on young people who wish to do voluntary work in Africa.

Participants will receive a scholarship that supports the journey to the project countries and for their living expenses during three months abroad. The support for the travel costs to the host country will be a fixed amount equivalent to a cheap (early booked) ticket. The scholarship varies between €750 and €1.200 for three months, according to the average living expenses in the respective host country.

It depends on each participant's initiative (purchasing cheap tickets) and choices (standard of living abroad) whether and how much personal resources must be added. The costs of the preparation seminars are covered by GLEN but the travel costs for the preparation seminar have to be paid ahead by participants, but will be refunded.

Volunteers can take part either in a project in Uganda, where they will be teaching teenagers who have little formal education; or in South Africa, where volunteers will be helping out in an "education and life-skills" training programme with children from the poorest area of Cape Town; or in an AIDS-prevention project in Kenya.

More information about the country projects can be obtained from Third World Group's and GLEN Project's Websites: www.thirdworldgroup.org and www.glen-europe.org respectively.

Those who are interested in taking part in the project should send their CV to info@thirdworldgroup.org as well as an application form which can be downloaded from the Websites. For more information e-mail the Third World Group or call Dr Manuel Fenech on 7990-5505.
