The New Choral Singers, under the direction of Robert Calleja, held two Christmas concerts, one at the Annunciation parish church, Balzan, and the other at St John of the Cross parish church, Ta' Xbiex. I attended the second concert ten days before Christmas, which I'm sure launched the Christmas spirit of the newborn Christ to all present.
The choir was superb. The variety of carols selected was admirable - six different languages and several musical styles kept the audience looking forward to the next item as the programme progressed.
The congregation thoroughly enjoyed the evening and participated in the singing with the full choir in three well-known carols Adeste Fideles, Fuq Tiben f'Maxtura, and the closing carol, Hark! The Herald Angels Sing.
There was singing by the choir's chamber ensemble, the female voices alone, and soloist Louiselle Pace Gouder, who was superb in her interpretation of O Holy Night. Mro Calleja's arrangement of our own marvellous carol Ninni, La Tibkix Izjed was noteworthy - the best I've ever heard it sung. Stille Nacht is always a must at every Christmas concert and was beautifully sung in three languages.
The choir received a lengthy applause for its interpretation of the I'm Gonna Sing. Organist Romina Morrow complemented the choir on both the church organ and piano.
Mro Calleja and the New Choral Singers are to be congratulated on such a pleasant evening's performance.
