Obituary

PACE. On December 29, at Sir Paul Boffa Hospital, MARIS of Sliema, aged 49, passed peacefully away comforted by the rites of Holy Church. She leaves to mourn her loss her mother Salvina, widow of Philip, her brother Mario and his wife Mariella, her sister-in-law Anna, widow of Philip, her nephews and nieces Claire, Christina and Sean, Philip, Cristina and Lucas, Nicholas and Michaela, the Midolo family, teachers, students and staff of St Catherine's High School, relatives and friends, especially Polly and Amante Sant.
The funeral leaves Sir Paul Boffa Hospital today at 8.15 a.m. for St Gregory's parish church, Sliema, where Mass praesente cadavere will be said at 8.45 a.m., followed by interment in the family vault at the Santa Maria Addolorata Cemetery. No flowers by request but donations to Dar tal-Providenza, Siggiewi, will be appreciated. Lord grant her eternal rest.

US Embassy

The US Embassy in Malta will be closed on Tuesday in observance of a National Day of Mourning in the United States to mark the passing away of former President Gerald Ford. The Embassy will also be closed on Monday, New Year's Day, and will resume regular opening hours on Wednesday.

The public can sign a condolence book in the lobby of the US Embassy, St Anne Street, Floriana from 11.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m., on Wednesday and Thursday.

Duty on fuel

The Customs Department said yesterday the derogations from the provisions of Council Directive 2003/96/EC granted by Council Directive 2004/74/EC of April 29, 2004, allowing fuel to be supplied free of excise duty for private pleasure navigation by air or by sea between Malta and other EU member states, expires tomorrow.

As from Monday all fuel for this purpose will therefore be supplied duty-paid.

The Customs Department said the government has formally applied for a renewal of the derogations. However, the European Commission has already said it does not agree with the renewal of the derogation for maritime navigation.

Eucharistic celebration

A Eucharistic celebration will be held by the Diocesan Committee of Our Lady of Fatima at the Home for the Clergy, Anglu Grima Street, Fleur-de-Lys, Birkirkara on January 6 starting with Mass at 4 p.m.

The holy rosary will be recited after Mass in the presence of the Holy Eucharist exposed on the altar and, finally, Benediction will be imparted.

British High Commission

The offices of the British High Commission, including the visa and passport section and the UKTI trade section, will be closed on Tuesday.

BOV extends offers on personal loans

Bank of Valletta is extending the special offers on its personal lending products up to January 31, 2007.

Customers will benefit from a one per cent discount on the interest rate applicable on BOV personal loans, a three-month moratorium and the waiving of all processing fees.

Customers taking out a BOV home loan during this period will also be eligible to take out a BOV personal loan of up to Lm5,000 with a 1.5 per cent discount on the interest rate and for a term of up to seven years.

Other offers are applicable on the Visa Classic and Mastercard credit cards issued by Bank of Valletta. A zero per cent interest rate will apply for the first six months on new cards issued and the bank will waive the card fee for the first year. New BOV gold card holders will not be charged the card fee on the supplementary card for the first year.

Scout recruitment

Fifteen participants from Ireland, Malta, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Serbia, Sweden and the United Kingdom were brought together at Mount St Joseph, Targa Gap for a workshop on Adult Recruitment In Scouting.

The workshop, inaugurated by Tourism and Culture Minister Francis Zammit Dimech, aimed to explore ways in which one can use the centenary of scouting to recruit adults in leadership and other roles within the Scout Movement.

Choral concert

The Gaulitanus Choir under the musical direction of Colin Attard will be ending Gozo's cultural festive season with a concert at the St Francis church, in Victoria, on January 6 at 7.30 p.m.
