Nowadays people are honouring Maltese personalities who distinguished themselves and contributed to the life and welfare of the people, by building monuments to commemorate them for future generations.

This is a very commendable act indeed.

Recently, the Valletta local council erected a bust to Pope Pius V who contributed money and even sent his engineer to help with the building of the new city.

But, so far, nobody has ever thought of commemorating the founder of Valletta, the heroic and brave Grand Master Jean Parisot de la Valette who laid the first stone of the city on March 28, 1566, just a few months after delivering the country from the Turks in the Great Siege of 1565.

There is no relic or any sign to remind people of the founder of this World Heritage City which is named after him.

I think that mayor Paul Borg Olivier and the Valletta local council, together with Ray Bondin, should fill this lacuna, by building a deserving monument to La Valette, commemorating him to today's and future generations.
