As a resident of Swieqi, I have just received a copy of the Swieqi local council magazine. A very creditable effort, even if rather late in the day.
What worries me, and numerous other residents of the locality, is the detailed plan of the proposed revised road network, referred to in Mayor Alfred Curmi's message, which clearly indicates that the council still intends to go ahead with its intention to make Triq is-Sidra and others one way. Which practically means all roads in Swieqi with the exception of a small number becoming one way.
This despite the fact that two Nationalist councillors out of seven have indicated that they are against this proposal, by signing the petition circulated to residents. If I recall correctly, the mayor had stated clearly that no final decision would be taken by the council before further discussions with the residents who were opposed to the proposed one-way system.
Perhaps the mayor, Alfred Curmi, could kindly explain why road markings have been painted in the area in these past few days. To me, this indicates in no mistaken terms that the council has decided to go ahead with its plan. I understand that the road markings have not been painted in place by the ADT. Has the council jumped the gun?
With local council elections coming up in mid-March, a reply is eagerly awaited.
