I have been following with increasing interest the ongoing debate about whether an anti-abortion clause should be included in Malta's Constitution.
Although the promoters of this initiative seem very well organised and consistent in their approach, they have failed to convince me that such a constitutional amendment is indeed necessary.
After all, abortion is illegal in Malta and there is no significant public or political support for its introduction. Regardless of how many MPs sign this petition I think it will be very hard for them to ultimately agree on the final text to be adopted.
I'm sure that as that day draws near, more of them would have to give more thought to safeguarding basic women's rights, such as the right of a woman to choose to terminate a pregnancy if it poses a grave danger to her health, or if the pregnancy is the result of a rape.
