I would like to appeal to the authorities to reinstate laws which allowed motorists to be fined (without necessarily stopping them and issuing tickets) for using their mobile phones while driving. It is a trend which appears to be on the increase.

In barely two days I was almost involved in a collision with a young woman driving through Marsa while she was texting at the same time (and even though I tooted my horn, she continued to swerve over several lanes while she continued to text. I had to wait behind an elderly gentleman outside the Sliema police station while he answered a call, saw a mother with children speeding down the main road in San Gwann while chatting on the phone and countless other examples. How many accidents must happen in our fair land because people are using their phones while driving?

The roads are manic enough with speeding cars, people who feel their place in life is to drive touching your back bumper, with potholes and vehicles illegally parked. Must we also add careless motorists too busy to drive safely as they chat/text? Action is needed before innocent pedestrians or careful drivers suffer at the hand of these careless people.
