Martin Farrugia's letter (The Sunday Times, December 3) is indeed to be commended. In the cultural war going on presently it is obvious that no efforts are being spared, especially in Europe, to attack and eventually edge out anything reminiscent of Christianity and its values.

This is often done by using the very convenient excuse of not offending people of other faiths. In Malta, we have so far, thankfully, not reached the stage of other European countries, but perhaps because of our long history of colonial domination and resulting inferiority complex, and the increasing erosion of our faith, the urge to conform to whatever other larger countries do, is often irresistible.

As matters stand now, Christians are even being denied to right to feel offended by those who feel they have some divine right to deride all that they hold dear. Thus, the right to offend Christians, as well as people of other faiths, is sacred but woe betide the latter if they feel offended and publicly voice their feelings. The intolerance and bigotry of the 'enlightened' knows no bounds!

Christians, of course, can never use violence to counteract the unwarranted and unabated attacks on their faith. However, as Mr Farrugia rightly says, there are certain actions we can take whenever it is possible to do so. We can certainly show our disapproval by boycotting films, cultural centres, plays, and especially TV shows which have an obvious and not so obvious anti-Christian and, especially anti-Catholic, agenda.

It is foolish and naïve to believe that any good will ensue by taking part in such shows, because the opposite is usually the case. It only serves to legitimise such shows and thus encourage more people to watch them making them even more popular.

If by behaving in this manner we are called bigots and fundamentalists then it matters not at all. Christ, while on earth, was called far worse appellatives and since, as He reminded us "the servant is not better than the master", being in His company is reward enough for our behaviour.
