The news that Fort St Angelo was to be transformed into a top class spa and health club rang alarm bells in my head. Whenever the fort is earmarked for development I can't help feeling uneasy.

Maybe it's because of past recollections when an attempt was made in the 1970s to turn the fort into a tourist complex complete with swimming pool and disco: the project proved to be a financial and cultural disaster.

Minister Jesmond Mugliett is quoted as saying that this project will restore the place to its former glory. I can't imagine how a health spa can revive a 16th century fort. Be that as it may, let's just hope that past mistakes are not repeated.

Will the fort remain accessible to the public on September 8 every year once the project takes off?
