Four women and a man, all relatives, have been conditionally discharged for two years for assaulting a police constable at the law courts two years ago.

Magistrate Tonio Micallef Trigona heard how on November 13, 2004, a certain Carmela Spiteri had been arraigned in court. As she was being escorted out of the court room by a police constable Ms Spiteri's relatives assaulted the officer.

Consequently, Ms Spiteri's 20-year-old son Darren, her three sisters Patricia Camilleri, 43, Brenda Mallia, 36, and Rose Mary Camilleri, 23, and their mother Mary Rose Spiteri, 63, were charged with assaulting and injuring the constable.

The magistrate heard how witnesses to the brawl only saw Darren Spiteri strike the officer.

All the accused were conditionally discharged for two years and Darren Spiteri was also fined Lm100.

Police Inspectors Ramon Mercieca and Alexdander Grech prosecuted.
