On behalf of the people of Vittoriosa and many others who are proud of our artistic heritage, I would like to show our great appreciation for the excellent restoration that is going on in St Lawrence parish church.
It is a very common remark that young people are the burden of society. This is certainly not the case in Vittoriosa where many youths are giving a good helping hand in many social activities, such as continuous fund raising for the feast organisation, including the yearly rock opera.
Besides such groups, another group is, on a voluntary basis and in coordination with the Chapter and the archpriest, doing an excellent job restoring the six chapels at the St Lawrence parish church. People who professionally do such restoration had very good comments on the final results. It is really amazing what great talents and ability such young people can offer. Taking advantage of this letter and being the person who wrote several times on this newspaper regarding the restoration of the St Lawrence monument in the main square of Vittoriosa, I feel that I must be the first person to congratulate the authorities and all persons involved, especially the workmen, who actually are doing the complicated removal of layers of white paint and the reconstruction of the damaged sculpture.
They are really doing a professional job. Our monuments and churches are the pride of Maltese craftsmanship in many artistic branches. It is extremely important that educating our children to appreciate our culture one day will give the result that they will be the people to restore and make sure that this patrimonial heritage will be handed over to the future generation in an even better state.
