Around half a tonne of diesel was spilled in Grand Harbour yesterday evening, close to the Cottonera yacht marina.

Alpha Briggs Mediterranean Ltd, a specialised oil spill response company, was monitoring the spill last night.

The lack of light prevented recovery operations but booms were deployed all along the pontoon to contain the oil which is being recovered this morning. Present on site were Anthony Mallia from the Oil Pollution Response Module and Paul Pisani from Alpha Briggs.

Alpha Briggs is a recently set up joint venture company between the international BRIGGS Group and the AOST Group in Malta.

Its first call out to stand by was a few months ago when the Golden Bay ran aground near Marsascala. On that day, however, there was no spillage.
