Lufthansa Technik will be venturing into the business of overhauling Airbus wide body aircraft in 18 months' time, according to Lufthansa Technik Malta chief executive Louis Giordimaina.
Once the project is inaugurated, the company will be in a position to offer young people the opportunity of embarking on a career with exciting prospects in aircraft maintenance, he said.
The company will be opening its hangars to interested persons, especially students and parents, today between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. This event is part of the firm's efforts to raise further awareness about the company and future careers. Guided tours will be held every 30 minutes. Visitors must take their ID cards as they will be entering a security area. The hangar is next to Security Gate 1, past Luqa industrial estate.
Lufthansa Technik Malta has held a series of roadshows at Mcast, the Junior College, Naxxar Higher Secondary and the Employment and Training Corporation informing students/trainees about the company, its expansion project, as well as career opportunities in aircraft maintenance.
Courses leading to both licensed and unlicensed aircraft mechanics are due to start next month at Mcast. Entry requirements are O level passes in English, physics and mathematics at Grade 5 or higher, or an Mcast engineering foundation certificate.
The licence requires both vocational education, consisting of theory and some practice, and training on the job, some of which could be done abroad, as part of the required practical education. Further details can be obtained from the registrar at Mcast.
The road shows included information about Lufthansa Technik Malta and the experiences of certifying staff, licensed personnel and apprentices from the company.
