Three men were yesterday charged with assaulting police officers.

Magistrate Antonio Mizzi heard Carmel Saliba, 29, and Justin Polidano, 21, of Kirkop plead not guilty to assaulting seven police constables on Sunday at 6.30 p.m. in Mqabba and later at the Zurrieq police station.

Mr Saliba was also charged with defaming Inspector Joseph Agius while he was being questioned.

Mr Polidano was charged with breaching the conditions of a previous release.

In the second case, the magistrate heard Jason Delia, 29, of Senglea plead not guilty to assaulting and trying to seriously injure PC Mark Anthony Buttigieg and William Dingli when he drove his car in the direction of the constable's car and damaging it in Senglea on September 3.

He was also charged with threatening and insulting the constable, driving dangerously and speeding.

All three men were granted bail against a personal guarantee of Lm1,000 each.

Police Inspectors Joseph Agius and Anthony Cassar prosecuted.

Lawyer Franco Debono appeared for Mr Saliba and Mr Polidano and lawyers Joseph Giglio and Roberto Montalto appeared for Mr Delia.
