J.D. Power, a global marketing information service firm representing the voice of the customer, translates survey responses from consumers and businesses into studies and reports that companies worldwide use to improve their business, surveyed 67,000 American consumers to release results of their first Automotive Environmental Index (AEI). The AEI is comprised of EPA information combined with consumers' voice relating to fuel economy, air pollution and green house gases.

In the study, Hyundai scored 590 marks, ranking in sixth place. The Accent and Lantra made it into the top 30 vehicle list. This rating is one of a lengthy list of recognitions that Hyundai achieved for its green technologies based on its top-class environmental friendly technology.

This environmental commitment was underlined when Hyundai was selected as one of five project groups including the American Big Three automakers and a Japanese consortium in the pilot projects of fuel cell-powered vehicle and hydrogen refuelling station supported by the US Department of Energy.

With the new Environmental Technology Research Centre, Hyundai will focus exponentially on green car development, including the development and commercial production of core technology for fuel cell and hybrid automobiles, technology development for reducing greenhouse gases and improving fuel economy and development of recycling technology and alternative material for heavy metals.

Rising oil prices and awareness for environmental protection result in increased preference for low fuel consuming and environmental friendly vehicles. To this extent, Hyundai's goal is to transform itself into a global environmental friendly automaker by spurring its efforts to develop green vehicles.
