Nationalist MEPs Simon Busuttil and David Casa welcomed the adoption of the Services Directive in the European Parliament.
The right to sell services in the EU was already established in the EU Treaty but several EU countries still retained obstacles, which hinder free movement.
"This law is particularly important for a small island economy, such as Malta, where the services sector is a key pillar. This law will now throw the EU services market wide open to us. Let's make the best of it," Dr Busuttil and Mr Casa said.
They recalled that the Services Directive was an important achievement for the EU since it will make business easier for the services industry, which accounts for 60 per cent of economic activity with the potential to create 600,000 new jobs in the EU.
Earlier this year, the EPP-ED group in the European Parliament (to which the PN belongs) was instrumental in rewriting the Services Directive and to fend off restrictions that the European Socialist Group wanted to introduce to dilute the law's impact.
