A good picture tells the whole story and a glance at the first edition of The Times Picture Annual 2006 amply shows this.
It is a collection of fine pictures showing the main events in 2006 and the final part of 2005, published by Allied Newspapers Company Ltd and printed at Progress Press.
The publication includes a selection from the thousands of pictures taken by staff photographers of The Times and The Sunday Times as well as images by Reuters photographers and which appeared on both newspapers. There are also pictures by freelance photographers including one by Robert Camilleri: an impressive aerial view of Grand Harbour when seven cruise liners visited. The book portrays the shocking pictures of the mid-air collision between two aircraft during the Malta Aero Grand Prix, the Queen's visit to Malta when the Commonwealth summit was held here just over a year ago, illegal immigrants, the installation of new Gozo Bishop Mario Grech along with other unusual shots of personalities in the news, to mention just a few.
The Times Picture Annual features the work of staff photographers Darrin Zammit Lupi, who also compiled the collection, Jason Borg, Chris Sant Fournier and Matthew Mirabelli.
It is divided into six sections for easier reference namely news, people in the news, daily life, sport, art and entertainment and foreign news covering the period November 2005 to November 2006.
The former editor of The Times, Victor Aquilina, writes in the book's foreword that, at the end of each year, it is customary for some newspapers, including The Times, to carry a round-up of news and pictures that made the headlines during the year, but many readers often end up just glancing through the pictures rather than reading the review. They prefer letting the picture tell the story.
The Times Picture Annual 2006, 192 pages containing 159 colour images, is available at the price of Lm6.95 from leading bookshops.
