Champs join Stripes at the top of the standings
Melita, Mosta too strong for Mgarr and Rabat
There were no surprise results after the three matches from the women's league played this week at the Luxol Ground.
Leaders Hibernians trounced Sta Venera Lightnings 6-0 and Melita scored five goals without reply against lowly Mgarr United.
Mosta chalked up their second three-pointer of the season following a clear 4-0 win over Rabat Ajax.
Hibernians joined Birkirkara at the top of the standings with 12 points each from four matches.
Both pacesetters have yet to concede a goal in the league as another two-horse race looms for the championship title. They face each other in a direct clash next Tuesday at the Luxol Ground.
As the scoreline indicates, Hibernians were the sole masters on the pitch as Sta Venera were never in the match.
After resisting the early pressure, the Saints' fort crumbled on 15 minutes when Sarah Caruana beat Roberta Cutajar with a rasping grounder.
Caruana made it 2-0 on 26 minutes and more goals followed after the break. Dorianne Theuma scored twice, one of the goals coming from a penalty, and Ylenia Carabott hit a brace to round up the score for the champions.
Melita are third in the standings with seven points after collecting maximum spoils from their match against Mgarr. Melita had some regulars missing but the side was still good enough to have the better of their modest opponents.
The goals for Melita came from Daniela Micallef (16th), Gabriella Zahra (25th, 53rd) and Oriana Bedingfield (47th, 51st).
Mosta are fourth in the standings with six points from four matches.
On Wednesday, they looked better than Rabat in most departments to secure a deserved victory. Victoria Saliba, Karen Lia, Yanika Fenech and Vanessa Buttigieg were on the mark for Mosta.
