A route bus driver was yesterday handed down a two-year jail term suspended for four years and fined Lm3,500 after he admitted to causing serious injuries to a student and to a coach driver through negligence when the bus he was driving collided with a coach carrying schoolchildren almost three years ago.

Magistrate Saviour Demicoli heard Joseph Grech, 35, of Mqabba plead guilty to seriously injuring the school coach driver and a student and slightly injuring another four students and a teacher in Zebbug on February 27, 2004.

Mr Grech also admitted to driving dangerously and recklessly, speeding and crossing over a continuous white line.

The accident occurred in Siggiewi Road, Zebbug, at about 2 p.m. when a Leyland route bus, driven by Mr Grech, collided with a Bedford Dominant coach carrying school children.

On handing down judgment, the magistrate took note of the serious nature of the crime and banned Mr Grech from driving for two years.

Police Inspector Jesmond Borg prosecuted.

Lawyer Yana Micallef Stafrace appeared for Mr Grech.
