Health Minister Louis Deguara yesterday told Parliament there were 282 smoking-related deaths during the first 10 months of the year.

Dr Deguara, who was answering a question by Carmelo Abela (MLP) said 213 were men and 69 women.

Justice and Home Affairs Minister Tonio Borg also told Mr Abela that the police had taken action against 722 persons for smoking in bars and restaurants, two in hospitals and one in an office.

The police also arraigned 50 people who allowed smoking on their premises, which were public.
