Students are concerned about whether the university is equipping them with the right tools to tackle the world away from campus.
Kevin Muscat, who yesterday received his Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) degree, said in his oration that the synergy between the university and the industry's needs had to improve.
Everybody has a role to play - the industry should be prepared to offer practical training, while students had to exploit every opportunity.
"In no way should this be interpreted that the industry should dictate the student's choice. On the contrary, everybody should work together to find new areas to train students," Mr Muscat said.
The team spirit was highlighted by Maureen Cole, from the university's Faculty of Economics, Management and Accountancy, who oversaw yesterday's three graduation ceremonies.
She encouraged students to work together and to grab any opportunity that involved working within a team. She also called on employers and professionals to guide students to make a successful transition into the working world.
"I fear that all the efforts made during the students' training will be lost if graduates do not find help when they're embarking on their professional job," Dr Cole said.
Karys Caruana, who graduated Bachelor of Engineering and Architecture (Hons), focused on a common problem experienced in her course where theory dominated the practical aspect.
"It is a pity that after five years, practical work, especially on construction sites, was not given the attention it deserves," she said.
Meanwhile, Michael Spagnol, who graduated Bachelor of Arts (Hons), reminisced about the good old days students spent at university and how the experience had developed their way of thinking. He thanked foreign students who gave a taste of different viewpoints and cultural traits.
"We are celebrating the end of an important phase in our lives and the beginning of a new one. It's like we're torn between so many memories we don't want to forget and so many goals we wish to reach. I hope this experience makes you aim higher in life and that you use what you have learnt to make a meaningful difference in society."
