World AIDS Day, commemorated annually worldwide on December 1, is intended to celebrate the progress made in the battle against this epidemic, generate more awareness, highlight preventive initiatives, and bring into focus remaining challenges.

Sedqa strongly recommends that there should be a stronger emphasis on prevention, especially among the young generation. It is a known fact that irresponsible sexual contact and needle sharing in drug consumption are the main causes of the rapid spread of the HIV virus, which leads to AIDS.

While calling for prevention in this regard, the agency also urges individuals whose behaviour might have put them at risk of contracting the HIV virus, to educate themselves, use the services available and when indicated, undergo blood checks. This reduces the risks both for the individual and those who come in contact with him/her.

Sedqa emphasises one-to-one interventions with its service users, encouraging HIV testing especially among drug users. Through its harm minimisation philosophy, Sedqa promotes safety and cautiousness when it comes to drug abuse, mainly by discouraging needle sharing and sharing of other paraphernalia related to drug consumption, which can lead to the spread of infectious diseases such as Hepatitis and HIV.

Sedqa also appeals to young people against excessive alcohol consumption, which can lead to unwanted sexual relationships and other risky behaviour.
