Resourses and Infrastructure Minister Ninu Zammit yesterday inaugurated the new promenade project at Wied Babu in the limits of Zurrieq.

Work on the Lm400,000 project began in January and was completed last month. It consisted of the building of a pedestrian belvedere which is four metres wide and 750 metres long.

Mr Zammit told the inauguration ceremony that great care was taken on the materials used so that this would blend with the locality's rural aspect.

Over 2,400 m2 of soft stone was used for the paving. Another 1,200 m of porfido tiles were also used. A total of 420 m of railings were installed. No fewer than 160 recessed lights, to avoid light pollution, were put in place.

The second phase of the project - an extension of the promenade to Hagar Qim - will be carried out next year.
