Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi inaugurated the first civic centre in Qala earlier this month. The premises will house the local council offices, a community hall, the police station, a public library and health centre,.
Speaker Anton Tabone, Gozo Minister Giovanna Debono, Police Commissioner John Rizzo, various MPs, mayors and councillors, and representatives of local organisations were present for the inauguration, during which Qala archpriest Rev. Dr Joe Zammit blessed the civic centre.
Mayor Paul Buttigieg explained the importance of the services that the centre will offer under one roof, making it easily accessible by people with special needs.
Mr Buttigieg listed projects that have been carried out in Qala throughout the year, like the restoration of Fort St Anthony for which the council has already collected Lm29,500.
Minister Debono highlighted the importance of local councils supporting each other and praised Qala council for completing the project in just 10 months. The building replaced a wing of the local primary school that was not being utilised.
Prime Minister Dr Gonzi praised the council for its initiative and for using European Union resources.
