Appreciation - Ivan Magri Overend
Mgr Philip Calleja writes:
I have just had the news that the funeral of Ivan Magri Overend, who passed away at the venerable age of 90 on November 15, will take place at Our Lady of Peace church, in Burnham, Slough, on Friday at 12.45 p.m. and that the Maltese flag will be draped across his "special box" during the service.
Holy Mass will be celebrated by the parish priest, Fr Michael Turner, who will be assisted by Fr Alfred Xuereb and Fr Stephen Sciberras.
I join in prayers all those who will attend the funeral and offer all them, on behalf of my colleagues, members of the Malta Emigrants Commission, our deep sympathy on the sad loss of our common friend Ivan.
Ivan was a great man, a highly intelligent person. He was not born in Malta. He was born in Cairo of Maltese parents yet a true lover of Malta and of all that is Maltese. He cultivated the Association of the Maltese Community of Egypt since its inception and its members did very rightly choose him as their president ad vitam. He was a great historian and left us, in his many lectures and contributions to the press, a rich history of the various associations that constituted the Maltese communities of Egypt over the past 120 years of their existence.
I came to know him in the early 1960s. We met in London and kept on meeting here in Malta or overseas almost every year. He interested himself in Maltese migration and sought to be friendly with whoever interested himself in Maltese migration. He took an active part in the organisation of the two Maltese migration conventions held in Malta in 1969 and 2000 and left with us at Dar l-Emigrant memories of the Maltese of Egypt for our Malta Emigration Museum.
He was honoured with the Medal of the Order of Malta by the President of Malta in 1999 and in 2000 he was granted the citizenship of Malta (dual citizenship).
May God bless him and give him eternal rest.

A loved one is a treasure of the heart and to lose my darling Susan is like losing my heart for evermore. The love that Susan brought me did not leave, for the essence of her soul lingers on, it cannot escape my heart for it has been there forever. I cling to the happy memories and let them find their way to heal me. The love and laughter, the joy in the togetherness we shared will make me strong. I have come to realise that during our time together, no matter how long it was meant to be, I was blessed to have had such a precious gift of love in my life. Her sorrowful mother, Connie.

The book, Learning And Social Difference, Challenges For Public Education And Critical Pedagogy, by Carmel Borg and Peter Mayo, was the subject of a presentation by John Portelli of the Ontario Institute of Studies in Education of the University of Toronto.
The presentation was made at Agenda's Waterfront Outlet.
Prof. Portelli discussed the book in the context of the neo-liberal scenario as well as how neo-liberalism impinges on educational policy and undermines humanistic traditions in the field. The book combines both theoretical and empirical work building on the works of Antonio Gramsci, Paulo Freire and Lorenzo Milani.
Prof. Mayo spoke about the development of the book project while Dr Borg outlined the book's main topics.
