An Algerian inmate has been jailed for 10 months for trying to escape from custody and assaulting two officers with his crutches when he was escorted to St Luke's Hospital for treatment.

Mohammed Tensi, 25, was found guilty of trying to escape from custody, assaulting the two officers who escorted him to hospital and slightly injuring one of them on October 25, last year.

Magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera heard how Mr Tensi assaulted officers Godwin Agius and Christopher Farrugia when they stopped him from approaching a hospital window. He failed to follow their orders and assaulted them with his crutches in an attempt to flee his escort.

Police Inspector Carlo Ellul prosecuted.
