A young man has been put on probation for three years after he admitted to defiling a nine-year-old girl in August.

Magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera handed down the judgment after hearing that the young man was a first-time offender and was very sorry for his actions.

It turned out he had lowered his trousers' zipper in the presence of the girl, who ran away.

The magistrate handed down the maximum probation sentence to ensure that the man, 20 and who is a computer engineering graduate, would not repeat the offence.

She ordered a ban on the publication of the identity of the man and the victim "in the interest of justice due to the nature of the case".

Police Inspector Mario Tonna prosecuted.

Lawyers José Herrera and Veronique Dalli were the defence team.
