A 24-year-old man was charged yesterday with trying to seriously injure two police constables when he allegedly threatened and assaulted them while in possession of a knife and a metal bar in Balzan on Sunday.
Joseph Compagno was remanded in custody after he pleaded not guilty to trying to seriously injure PC Stephen Mallia and PC Raymond Saliba and slightly injuring them, and to threatening and assaulting the officers at about 3.15 a.m.
He was also charged with threatening the constables with a metal bar, causing over Lm500 damage to a police car, the possession of a knife and failing to follow police orders.
The accused also pleaded not guilty to acting indecently in public, breaching the peace while drunk, breaching the conditions of a previous release and relapsing.
He was remanded in custody after Magistrate Joseph Apap Bologna heard that the man did not have a fixed residence and was not trustworthy.
Police Inspector Kevin Farrugia prosecuted.
