Philippe Bernold, winner of the first prize in the 1987 Jean-Pierre Rampal International Flute Competition, will be performing with guitarist Simon Schembri at the Manoel Theatre, in Valletta, tomorrow at 8 p.m.
Born in 1960, Mro Bernold studied with Alain Marion at the Paris Conservatory obtaining first prize in 1982. He has performed as a soloist and chamber musician with renowned artists as well as being conducted by Lorin Maazel, Jean-Pierre Rampal, John Eliott Gardiner, Semyon Bychkov, Kent Nagano, Yehudi Menuhin, and Ton Koopman. He has played at the Royal Festival Hall, in London, and at the Salle Pleyel and the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, in Paris, among other venues.
His next commitments include two visits to Japan and tours in Germany, Spain, Italy, Finland and France.
The concert programme includes Mauro Giuliani's Grande Sonate, Franz Schubert's Sonate Arpeggione arranged for flute and guitar and Astor Piazzola's Tangos featuring Simon Schembri's guitar solos as well as Histoire du Tango.
