When you bought your car a few years ago the dealer probably told you that your new car did not need additional rustproofing because it had a factory galvanised body.
Some years back manufacturers had to take a serious look at the rust problem and realised they had to do something about it. Many manufacturers started using materials pre-coated with zinc followed by an EC-primer, which in many cases is done by dipping.
Through statistical analysis of different models, it has been proven that some higher priced brands have a zinc nickel coating of 7.10 microns thickness, and showed no signs of rust in the hidden cavities even after 10 years on the road.
On the other hand most models have only a thinner zinc nickel coating of not more than 2.5 microns. This treatment also proved quite effective and statistical analysis shows that only a small percentage had rust visible on the surface within the first ten years.
However, closer inspection revealed that rust had already started developing in the closed cavities by the fourth or fifth year. And this is a serious problem because the rust is present and eating away at the car, out of sight, until it's too late.
Particularly in the case of used or pre-owned cars, a complementary treatment with anti-rust agent is recommended as soon as possible. Often it is difficult to know what cavity fluid treatment was applied by the manufacturer, or if it has been poorly carried out. Even in the case of cars with a reasonable rust protection from the factory, a complementary treatment is still recommended after three to four years, before hidden corrosion begins to spread. In most cases application of the correct product can slow down or even stop existing rust, if applied in time.
A complimentary rustproofing treatment which includes injection of all the closed cavities with a proven product will ensure that the life of your car is extended considerably.
You will be able to enjoy your car in good condition as long as you own it, and probably get a better part-exchange deal eventually.
Prevention is better than cure - especially in the case of rust.
