If nationalist mep David Casa intends to carry on recounting fables to his listeners, as he used to do on Radio 101 before the EU accession referendum, then he should do this on any day but never on a Sunday!

His bombastic statement that "never before had any Maltese government managed to bring such a huge sum to our shores" is another fable to add to his collection. I understand that way back in 1972 Mr Casa must have been a toddler, but this does not excuse his ignorance of the fact that in that year the Labour government had succeeded in making Britain pay a cool Lm14 million a year for seven years without Malta having to pay a cent!

Those Lm14 million a year were worth more than Lm84 million in today's equivalent as I have been reliably informed both by an accountant and a notary public.

As to his other piece of exaggeration, namely that the money we will receive from the EU "will help our country attain a better standard of living", I suggest that he asks the thousands of young couples, both those who have recently bought even a small property, and those who are still looking for one, if they feel that their standard of living has improved since we joined the EU. It is the main, if not the sole reason, for the explosion in property prices which is turning their lives into one of slavery.

Will Mr Casa ever inform his listeners that a big chunk of the millions of euros he mentioned will come to a halt in seven years' time? This was stated by Mr John Dalli (The Sunday Times, October 22), who added that as from that date Malta will become a net contributor to the EU budget.

Will this fact also bring about a "better standard of living", Mr Casa?
