Maltacom is sponsoring 11 MCAST students right through their course of studies for the next three years under the Technical Apprenticeship Scheme. The training course for the apprentices kicked off recently after the students signed an agreement with Maltacom. The apprentices entered into the agreement with Maltacom as their employer and the ETC respectively.
The apprentices are currently following an induction and familiarisation programme at Maltacom's training centre after which they will join the technical teams of the company's External and Internal Networks Division. Technical employees who were identified at an early stage to serve as job coaches have themselves received training to develop their skills in the field of coaching, mentoring and safety.
Apprenticeship schemes are an effective medium of vocational education and training worldwide. In Malta the schemes are based on a dual system with apprentices following both academic programmes at MCAST and on-the-job vocational training at the place of work.
In line with this policy, Maltacom is giving the apprentices supervised, structured, on-the-job training that will provide them in future with extensive training required for them to achieve highly skilled on-the-job performance standards.
"We aim at providing the local community, whose members are, in the majority, our customers, exposure to the world of telecommunications. Maltacom is at the forefront of hiring the best people graduating from educational institutions such as MCAST," said David Kay, Maltacom's CEO, during a meeting with the new apprentices.
Maltacom is proud to be at the forefront in teaming up with the education and vocational training bodies for the benefit of young people who are the workforce of tomorrow, he added.
