The Maltese and German governments are close to signing an agreement on a joint venture to explore the possibility of using energy generated from waste for the production of potable water, George Pullicino, Rural Affairs and Environment Minister said.

If successful, the venture should give useful insights into the possibility of using this important resource for developing countries, he said.

Mr Pullicino was speaking at a meeting with a group of students who are taking part in a European Union Comenius project on the theme European Encounters (Sharing Our Experience).

During the meeting, which was held at St Michael's Foundation, Mr Pullicino viewed various presentations and projects prepared by students from schools in Soure (Portugal), Giessen (Germany), Letohrad (Czech Republic) and Malta.

The project focuses on environmental themes such as climate change, global warming, safeguarding the environment and living a greener lifestyle.

Mr Pullicino also spoke about the EkoSkola (Eco-School) programme, saying it is one of the foremost examples of the usefulness of environment education.

A total of 47 local schools are taking part in this initiative and Mr Pullicino appealed for more to join as the programme, he said, ultimately benefits the students, school and society.
