The first phase of a project to improve the island's four major tunnels was launched last week with a call for expressions of interest.

The project will improve the lighting, signage, road markings and reflective material in the St Julians, Tal-Qroqq, Sta Venera and Kirkop tunnels.

A spokesman for the Roads Ministry explained that the expressions of interest would provide the information needed to issue a call for tenders for the works. He described the call for expressions of interest as a "fact-finding" mission.

The first tunnels to undergo works would be the ones close to Manuel Dimech bridge, the spokesman added. The works would be carried out while work is underway to bolster the bridge - a one-year project that should be completed by next September.

A study carried out some years ago had shown the need for improvements in the tunnels - especially with regard to lighting - to conform to international standards.

Asked about the cost, the spokesman said the amount had not yet been earmarked, adding that the figure would be decided once the expressions of interest are received.
